Doing Steady-State Cardio’ Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Losing Weight.’ Here’s Why.

Image
WHEN GUYS SET out to start losing weight, their mission usually begins in one familiar place: the treadmill. In fact, this old gym touchstone—that cardio = weight loss—is so well-worn that it’s practically a law of the universe. We hear guys say it over and over: “I need to keep my weight down, so I’ll do more cardio.” Then they trundle over to their gym’s  Treadmill   Row, flick on  ESPN , and settle in for 45 minutes of mostly unpleasant sweating. But here’s the thing: That’s not necessarily true. Cardio doesn’t necessarily translate to losing weight. In fact, one could argue that they’re two totally different modes of training. Why Running Is Such Perfect Cardio

Image
One 2014 study found that running is linked to a 45% drop in risk of death due to cardiovascular disease. “Runners on average lived three years longer compared to non-runners,” says study author D.C. Lee, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Iowa State University. Those mortality benefits held fairly steady regardless of how fast, how long or how often a person ran. Lee and his colleagues just published a follow-up report showing even more impressive benefits.  Running  for about two hours each week was linked to three extra years of life. He and his coauthors also found that running outperforms walking, cycling and some other forms of aerobic exercise when it comes to lengthening life. Image
When you’re in need of a quick cardio session, the first thing you probably do is lace up your running shoes. While getting on a  treadmill   is a great way to get your heart rate up, it’s best to go in with a plan so you don’t end up aimlessly jogging. This fat-blasting workout will ward off boredom, improve your endurance, and boost your cardiovascular health. And it only takes 30 minutes. I did this exact workout a couple of weeks ago with Michael Olzinski, MSc, Purplepatch endurance coach and Equinox run coach, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was one of the toughest  treadmill workouts  I’ve ever done (by the end, I’m pretty sure I was hurling profanities at Mike). I’m not an advanced runner by any means — the only race I’ve ever done was a 5K — so if I can get through this workout, anybody can. “This is an incredibly efficient and varied workout for all levels of athletes, from someone just looking for a structured way to start integrating running ...
